What is coaching?
Modern coaching is the practice of helping people grow in line with their own aspirations, beyond their current reality, toward a new and evolving vision for themselves. This is done in the context of a secure alliance between coach and client that allows for a vibrant coaching experience to unfold. The coach does not require knowledge, skills or experience in a client’s field. Instead she focuses on the values and beliefs that give rise to a client’s thoughts and behaviors, using these as the starting points for a client’s growth. She uses a technique called motivational interviewing, asking objective, open-ended questions that invite clients to explore their desire for change. A coach helps clients define clear and meaningful goals for themselves, and then get into action with a partnership that provides accountability and support. This work improves wellbeing, relationships and performance. It makes a real and measurable difference in people’s lives.
What coaching is, and is not.
Relevant
Coaching is not concerned with clients’ history, nor the specifics of their circumstances. Coaching focuses on clients’ present experience and present relationship to what they are seeking in their lives.
Empowering
Coaching is not prescriptive. It does not give advice. Coaching facilitates self-directed learning through objective, open-ended questions that allow clients to arrive at their own realizations about what they need to do.
Honoring
Coaching does not diagnose or label people. It does not see clients as broken or in need of fixing. Coaching regards clients as naturally intelligent, with an inborn capacity for creativity, resourcefulness, and change.
Challenging
Coaching is not just a practice of listening, although listening is an important part of what coaches do. Coaching challenges clients to take courageous action and be with the discomfort of change.
What is coaching good for?
Team Building
Consciously build culture around shared team values. Give feedback that builds relationship. Practice transparency and accountability. Develop an awareness of the relational dynamic among team members. Feel good about working together.
Leadership Development
Get clear about the kind of leader you want to be. Fine-tune your awareness of how you lead. Step into parts of your leadership that you want to explore. Lead from your values as well as the organizational playbook. Practice courageous decision-making.
Goal Achievement
Recognize what feels important for you to do. Take stock of the forces that hold you back, and decide what to do about them. Have a partner to belay you as you take your first steps, and to be with you through the setbacks and successes of your journey.
Career Design
Be witnessed for what you love to do and are great at doing. Identify what’s important to you in how you work. Pursue your purpose in whatever ways it is available to you. Act in ways that move you toward the impact you want to have.
Anxiety Regulation
Activate your body’s natural mechanisms for restoring stability and ease. Drop from the head into the heart to experience life with more clarity and purpose. Develop greater resilience to stress through the practice of breathing and meditation exercises.
Health Optimization
Explore your motivations for health change. Develop behavioral strategies that are personally meaningful and self-directed. Decide how you want to show up for your health journey. Identify allies and systems to support you along your journey.
What does a coaching engagement look like?
Coaching engagements are designed around the unique needs of each client. The duration of the engagement and frequency of individual sessions is informed by what the client would like to achieve and over what length of time. Engagements can begin with or without a defined duration. They can involve regularly recurring sessions, or sessions scheduled on an as-needed basis. On average, Kristen observes her clients making progress over a three month period of bi-weekly (once-every-two weeks) sessions, with an individual session typically scheduled for 60 min.
Kristen’s coaching is priced on a sliding scale to account for the number of people involved, number of coaching sessions, any travel required, and the USD exchange rate with a client’s home currency if applicable. Contact Kristen for more information on the pricing package she can offer you.
Online and In-Person
Coaching sessions are available online through Zoom, between 9AM-6PM Eastern Standard Time, Monday-Friday. Kristen can also accommodate in-person coaching sessions in South Florida, upon request.
